A modern bard
Engaging Performance, Technical Excellence, and Thorough Knowledge.
Forged with these lofty ideals and tempered by the needs of the new millennium,
My name is Theodore Cheek and I am the Avant Bard.
Soloist and continuo specialist, Theodore Cheek has found himself touring for recital series as well as large ensemble performances across the United States ranging from Charleston to Boston with additional guest artist appearances as far as the Caribbean and Europe. He continues to perform locally with ensembles such as the Philadelphia Choral Arts Society and the Handel Choir of Baltimore.
He has been a fixture of the East Coast Baroque opera scene, appearing in a variety of productions ranging from Cavalli’s La Calisto to Charpentier’s La Descente d’Orphee aux Enfers. Most recently he appeared in the inaugural performance of the centennial season for the Curtis Institute of Music as part of the continuo band for The Comet / Poppea, an avant-garde fusion of Monteverdi’s Baroque classic with George Lewis’ operatic rendering of W.E.B. Du Bois’ short story, The Comet.
Cheek holds Masters degrees in both Musicology and Lute Performance from Peabody Conservatory. In addition to maintaining a private studio of students, he also offers master classes at Temple University and is a listed College House teacher at the University of Pennsylvania. The focus of his research was on examining the reasons for the lute’s disappearance as well as highlighting the music of the last, prominent lute composers and how it embodied the style galant. At present, he looks to expand upon this research with the hopes of publishing on the subject.
